The first
debate/forum between candidates for the Georgia House of
Representatives, District 117 was held Friday during the
Austin Rhodes Show on WGAC-AM
580. Former
business executive and the Republican candidate Brett
McGuire chose to keep his message positive and inform the
voters why he is the smart choice and most qualified to be
their representative. He continued with his positive message
throughout the debate.
Martinez
business owner Frank Spears was the moderator of the debate,
substituting for talk show host Austin Rhodes who was out of
town. Prior to the show, the candidates were informed of the
debate rules and given three questions that would be asked.
The show was then opened up to callers to ask questions that
both candidates could answer.
McGuire
answered questions from the callers ranging from education to
tax reform; and from his political and business management
experience, was able to handle all questions in an educated,
professional manner. A few points McGuire spoke about was how
he is very passionate about education and the wise spending of
tax dollars, and how much time he has donated to veterans,
senior citizens, and children. As an active Church member,
McGuire has had many Christmas parties to collect toys for the
Methodist Children’s Home.
Although
McGuire's opponent, local farmer Lee Anderson was visibly
confused by a caller's question on zero-based budgeting,
McGuire answered the question in detail and explained that
budgeting process to Mr. Anderson and the radio audience. "I
think someone who will be representing one of the largest and
fastest growing districts in the State must know about budgets
and how to reduce government spending", commented McGuire
after the debate. "According to the Georgia Constitution,
passing a balanced budget is the only thing required of the
State Legislature. Can you imagine how the lack of knowledge
and education would be perceived on the floor of the House of
Representatives in Atlanta? Our district deserves someone who
can articulate the needs of our local families and
businesses.”
The next forum
will be held live on
WNRR-AM 1230
during the People and
Issues with Helen show, hosted by Helen Blocker-Adams on
Wednesday, June 11 at 1:45 PM.
